What Happens During A Professional Test
1. Coordination and Access
The plumber will schedule a convenient time, ensuring minimal disruption. The device (often located near the meter or in a plant room) must be accessible and not obstructed.
2. Temporary Water Shutdown
The water supply will be briefly isolated while the test is conducted. In most cases, this lasts only 20–30 minutes per device and is often unnoticed by occupants.
3. Test Procedure
The plumber uses a calibrated differential pressure gauge and test hoses to assess the integrity of the internal check valves and (for RPZs) the relief valve. In a DCVA, both check valves must independently seal against backflow. In an RPZD, the test checks that check valves hold pressure and the relief valve opens at the correct differential. For PVBs, the air inlet must open as pressure drops.
4. Minor Maintenance
If a valve is leaking or underperforming, the plumber may perform immediate repairs (e.g., replacing washers or springs). If the device fails completely, repairs or replacement may be needed.

5. Tagging and Paperwork

You’ll receive a copy of the test report for your records. Water authorities often require these to be retained for several years in case of audit or property sale.
