Do all properties require backflow testing? Not necessarily — only those that present a risk of backflow into the public water supply need to install and test devices.
A Backflow Device Is Already Installed
If there’s a visible device near your water meter (especially something with test ports or a relief valve), it’s likely a testable backflow prevention device. These typically require annual testing.
Your Property Type Or Use
If you manage or own any of the following, testing is usually required:
- Commercial or industrial facilities
- Medical clinics or dental offices
- Restaurants, cafes, and food prep areas
- Hair and beauty salons (especially with bidet hoses)
- Childcare centres, schools, or aged care facilities
- Properties with fire services or irrigation systems
- Sites with boilers, cooling towers, or rainwater tanks
You’ve Received a Notification
Your local water authority may issue a risk classification or require testing after a new connection or building upgrade. If you’ve received a letter, compliance is mandatory.
Plumbing Features Indicate Risk
Backflow protection is required if your plumbing system includes:
- Fire services with a mains connection
- Irrigation systems (especially with chemical dosing)
- Rainwater or greywater systems topped up with mains
- Bidet sprays, dishwashers, or lab equipment connected to potable supply
Building or Usage Change
If your property use has changed — e.g. from residential to commercial, or you’ve added new services — a backflow assessment may now be required.

A licensed plumber with backflow accreditation can carry out a risk assessment and let you know whether a device is required, and what type. It’s a small cost to avoid regulatory issues or safety risks.
